About

Companion Canines is a locally owned dog training company that offers training classes to Pocatello and the surrounding areas. The owner, Teressa Erickson-Rodiguez, has been professionally training dogs for almost 20 years. Classes are taught in Pocatello on Monday and Thursday nights. We have an indoor/outdoor location that we use and teach classes year-round.

Teressa has completed the rigorous course of training to become a CERTIFIED dog trainer through the Victoria Stilwell Dog Training Academy (VSA – Certified Dog Trainer). Teressa is also an AKC Farm Dog Judge.

As a member of the Pocatello Animal Shelter Advisory Board, Teressa advocates for sound and humane policies in the treatment of the city’s pet population.

Companion Canines was recognized in the 2024 edition of Idaho’s BestTM as the best dog trainer in Southeast Idaho.

Positive Training Methods – “Train the Trainer”

Teressa and her team of instructors use the latest science-based positive training methods to help you build a bond and create a partnership and trust with your dog. Our team is constantly working on improving and staying up to date with ways to teach dog parents how to achieve desired outcomes.

Their teaching focuses on Positive Reinforcement techniques that use non-confrontational methods to work a dog’s brain – rewarding positive behavior, establishing rituals and training actions that are incompatible with negative behavior, and lessening a dog’s confusion and frustration – all while enabling the dog to feel good inside and increase their confidence. The focus is on how dogs think, feel, learn and communicate. The objective is to teach YOU how to train your dog effectively while building a solid and positive relationship.

We never use any outdated aversive methods such as physical punishment, choke, prong or shock collars, or “alpha-based” dominance methods old-school trainers use.

Our Classes

Our Puppy and Foundation classes are small, typically less than 8 teams (dog/handler) and a minimum of two instructors per class. Classes are an hour long and go for 8 weeks, students will have live in person training and demonstration and access to video demonstrations of the class each week. Handouts and lifetime access to a trainer for questions after graduation is also offered for the dog that attended class.

The Intermediate and Advanced classes are for students who want to continue with more training and solidifying what they have learned in the foundation class. These classes are fun and more advanced for the serious teams that want to get the most out of their relationship with their dogs.
